You’re Not Too Old and It’s Not Too Late
Have you thought to yourself you are too old, and it is too late? Think again. If you give up on your dream, it will die. And a part of you will die with it. You are never too old to do what makes you happy. And as long as you’re alive, you have time.
“You are not too old and it is not too late.”
Rainer Maria Rilke
This week I was reminded of the quote by Rilke as two family members shared their personal successes with me. They serve as inspiration for this blog.
I’m sharing the quote with you because maybe you need to be reminded of this too – You’re not too old, and it’s not too late.
I imagine that you, like me, have a dream or goal that sits in the recesses of your mind or is lodged in your heart. It doesn’t go away. It’s always there. It just sits like a patient traveler waiting for the right conditions to embark on its journey. And perhaps you’ve carried the dream around with you for so long that it seems like that’s all it was ever meant to be, just a dream. Maybe you’ve tried to talk yourself out of it as the years pass. And maybe you’re now at the point where you question whether you’re deserving enough or whether God just has a different plan for you. You’ve told yourself you are too old, and it is too late.
Believe me, I know the inner narrative all too well. But I also know this: if we give up on our dream, if we give up on ourselves, that dream will die inside us and a part of us will die with it. We owe it to this life and to ourselves to pursue that which is deeply held inside us.
Concerning my two family members, they each could be perceived as being beyond the years when their dreams could naturally manifest. Yet, they continued to believe. They kept moving forward until God, the Universe, or fate honored their faith and steadfastness. Let us do the same.
“You are never too old to set a new goal or dream or new dream.” Les Brown
My fellow sojourner, what dream are you holding within your heart? Could it be that you desire to change careers, to do the work that lights you up instead of the one that just pays the bills? Does it require you to go back to school to get another degree or credential? Have you always imagined yourself living in another part of the world or spending your time on humanitarian causes? Do you want to marry or remarry, and this time experience true partnership and mutual, mature love? Or maybe you want to leave a loveless relationship that has been one of convenience, but at the cost of your freedom and growth. Are you an author who has many books still inside you? A musician or composer who has more songs to write or sing? Are you wanting to birth a child, but you hear the biological clock ticking loudly? Do you dream of turning your hobby into a business venture or your purpose into a cause-related non-profit?
Whatever your dream is, know this: It’s never too late to be what you might have been (George Eliot).
Today is your day. Today is my day. As long as we have our breath, we have enough. As long as we have our breath, we have everything we need to turn our dreams into reality.
Let us not wait for the right conditions. That’s an illusion. There may never be a “right” time. That’s fear speaking. It is our internal defense mechanism trying to keep us from venturing toward the life we’ve imagined. And yes, we are deserving. The dream was placed within us for a reason. It’s our heart speaking to us. I believe firmly, our hearts don’t lie.
You’re never too old to do what makes your heart happy. And as long as you are alive, you have time. Remember that.
Like my family members did, you and I will likely encounter obstacles or false starts but let those not deter us. Instead, let us keep moving toward the life of our dreams, our Aha! Lives.
Embark! I’m cheering for you.
