The Footprints We Leave Behind: What Kind of Ancestor Are You Becoming?
What Kind of Ancestor Are You Becoming?
Most of us will never have a monument built in our honor. We won’t have books written about us or holidays named after us. Yet every day, ordinary people leave footprints that shape the lives of others in ways they may never fully know.
The Footprints That Shaped Me
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the people whose footprints shaped me and for whom I am grateful. One of those people is my grandmother, whom we affectionately called Muddie. I remember fondly how Muddie called me Baby Dear, how kind and generous she was to everyone who knew her. Muddie never turned away a child selling candy, cookies, or other school fundraiser items. I remember how she always made me feel—important, safe, and cared for. We’d sit for hours together, and I’d listen to stories about her childhood and my grandfather. She had become a widow in her mid-thirties and was left to raise two girls while building a career as a teacher. I’m sure life was not always easy for her. Yet, I never heard my grandmother complain.
Sometimes I think I can still smell her perfume. The memories warm my heart, but they also remind me of the lessons she passed on without ever intending to teach them. Muddie taught me that family matters. That education opens doors. That resilience does not require bitterness. That generosity can be practiced in small, everyday ways. Most of all, she taught me that how we treat people may be one of the most enduring footprints we leave behind.
Those lessons still travel with me today.
Muddie is only one of many people whose footprints have shaped my life. Over the years, teachers encouraged me when I doubted myself, mentors opened doors I couldn’t yet see, coaches challenged me to grow, and friends offered wisdom and support at just the right moment. Each left something behind—a lesson, a perspective, a belief, or an example—that became part of my own journey.
Even people I never met have left footprints on my life. Nelson Mandela showed me that resilience can coexist with grace and forgiveness. Harriet Tubman demonstrated extraordinary courage and a willingness to risk everything for the freedom of others. My ancestors endured hardships I can scarcely imagine, overcoming obstacles and making sacrifices that helped create the opportunities I enjoy today.
The Footprints I’m Leaving Behind
As I reflect on the footprints that have shaped my life, I find myself wondering about the footprints I’m leaving behind. What lessons, values, and examples might I leave for those who come after me?
This is an essential question for me because my life mantra is simple: I want the world to know that I was here, and I cared.
What does that look like? It means showing up when it matters. Using my voice, gifts, and experiences in service to others. Caring about people, the environment, and leaving the world a little better than I found it. It means leaving footprints that matter—not only to those I love, but also to people I may never meet.
The kind of footprint I hope to leave will not be the result of good intentions alone. It will be shaped by the choices I make each day, the way I treat people, the causes I support, and the contributions I make. In many ways, I see my life as an opportunity to pay forward what others have given to me. Just as those who came before me planted seeds that I now enjoy, I hope the seeds I plant will bear fruit long after I am gone.
The Footprints We Leave for Others
Perhaps you’ve never thought about your life in terms of footprints. Most of us don’t. Yet every day, through our words, actions, choices, and relationships, we leave traces of ourselves behind. Who are the people whose footprints shaped your life? What lessons, values, or examples did they leave behind? And what footprints are you leaving for others today?
We may never know the full impact of our lives. But each of us can leave behind footprints that will move humanity forward.
