The Liberating Journey of Returning to Your True Self

by | Jul 1, 2025 | Aha! Life, Life Lessons

This is a powerful invitation to return to your true self. In this article, I explore what it means to let go of expectations, reconnect with who you really are, and begin the bold, liberating journey of becoming—with clarity, courage, and self-compassion.

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” ~ Carl Jung

There’s a version of you beneath all the roles, responsibilities, and reinventions—a version that existed before the world told you who to be. Becoming yourself isn’t about chasing something new. It’s about returning. Reclaiming. And allowing yourself to finally be seen—first by you, and then by others.

But let’s be honest, becoming isn’t always easy. It requires courage, clarity, and often, a quiet rebellion against the expectations that have shaped us for so long. We are born whole, but over time, we learn to mask and mold ourselves to gain approval, avoid conflict, and feel worthy. Somewhere along the way, many of us start asking: Who am I, really?

Becoming your true self is one of the boldest—and most liberating—expressions of that freedom.

The Call to Come Home to Yourself

At a recent Your Aha! Life brunch, a woman asked me a question that many wrestle with in silence:

“How do you start making your own decisions, living your life authentically without being weighed down by what others think you should do?”

Her question struck a chord. So many of us know that we’re ready to evolve into a fuller version of ourselves, but we hesitate. Why? Because we worry what others might say. Friends, family, or partners may have grown comfortable with a certain version of us. They may mean well, but their vision of who we should be can become a cage.

The truth is, stepping into your true self can feel like a disruption—a rebellion. But it doesn’t have to be destructive. You can make choices from a place of clarity and compassion. You can honor your growth while respecting others. But here’s one thing for sure: you can’t live their version of your life and call it your own.

Who Were You Before the World Told You Who to Be?

Many of us were raised to perform: to get the gold stars, follow the path, do what’s expected. We learned early that acceptance often comes with conditions: “be agreeable,” “don’t rock the boat,” “make us proud.”

So, we adapt. We learn to succeed by suppressing our innermost thoughts, aspirations, and identities. We internalize others’ dreams as our own. And while this might work for a time, eventually the cost becomes too high.

You know you’ve reached that threshold when pretending exhausts you. When your “success” feels empty. When your spirit aches for something more aligned, more true.

Whether you’re 25, 45, or 65, becoming yourself is one of the most significant transitions you’ll ever face. It involves reflection, release, and redefinition. It requires you to ask:

  • What do I believe?
  • What brings me joy?
  • What do I want to say, do, create, or become—regardless of who approves?

You don’t have to abandon everything or everyone. But you do have to stop abandoning yourself. Becoming you might mean drawing new boundaries. Saying no to roles or relationships that keep you small. Saying yes to passions or paths that once felt “unrealistic.”

And it starts with truth. You can’t become who you truly are without first knowing who that is.

You Don’t Owe the World an Explanation—But You Owe Yourself Your Freedom

It’s natural to want to maintain harmony with others, but not at the expense of inner harmony and authenticity. True peace comes when you’re no longer at war with yourself.

If you’re worried that being yourself might disappoint others, remember: it’s not your job to manage their reactions. It’s your responsibility to live in alignment with your truth. The people who love you will grow with you or make space for your growth. Either way, you set yourself free.

Practices to Support Your Becoming

  1. Spend time in self-reflection – Journaling, solitude, or meditation can help you hear your inner voice more clearly.
  2. Identify where you feel “off” – Notice when you’re acting out of obligation, guilt, or fear. That’s a sign you’ve stepped out of alignment.
  3. Practice saying what’s true – Start with small truths: “This isn’t for me.” “I need rest.” “I’m changing.” Your voice will get stronger.
  4. Revisit your values – Are you living in a way that honors what matters most to you? If not, where can you start?

Becoming you is a sacred unfolding. It doesn’t have to be loud, dramatic, or perfect. But it does have to be real. And the moment you stop hiding, shrinking, or performing—that is the moment you begin to live.

You don’t have to wait for permission. You’re already worthy. You’re already enough. And the world needs the truth of you—not the polished version, not the approved version, but the whole version.

You are free to be you. Now and always.

This week, take one small, courageous step toward becoming more of your true self. Here are three ways to begin:

  1. Name one area in your life where you’re living for someone else’s approval. Ask: What would I do if I weren’t afraid to disappoint?
  2. Spend 10 quiet minutes with yourself each day—journaling, meditating, or walking alone—listening for the voice underneath the noise.
  3. Practice telling the truth gently—whether to yourself or someone else. It could be as simple as saying, “I’m changing.”

You don’t have to do it all at once. Becoming you is a journey—and you’re already on your way.

Let’s keep growing—together.
